Zap-Map app aims to help EV drivers plan journeys

Zap-Map can let electric vehicles owners choose between a default route or one set to the owner’s preferences.

Electric charging network application Zap-Map now allows users to create routes through the service to ensure they can get to their destination with enough charge.

Zap-Map currently provides drivers with information on the location of charging points, the charging speed and if they’re in a good condition or not – but this route planner capability adds another dimension to the application.

The planner allows customers to choose between a quick plan that has been devised by the app, or it allows the user to make their own route while still integrating the appropriate amount of charging points.

Users can choose to filter out chargers in use, and all the route calculations are based on an electric vehicle’s real world range, rather than the quoted range from the manufacturer.

The app can be linked to Google Maps so that turn-by-turn instructions can be provided and view real-time progress along the journey.

Available to Android users now, the update to the Zap-Map app will be provided to Apple users later this summer.

Ben Lane, Zap-Map chief technical officer, said: “The new Route Planner is one of a number of tools developed by Zap-Map to support EV charging in the real-world. With its smart route selection wizard and EV drive range algorithm, the Route Planner has been designed to be easy to use and also to reflect real-world driving conditions.

“We are already planning V2 which will include additional range factors and notifications to alert drivers en-route in the event of road closures or planned charge stops going offline.”
