The S40 saloon is a compact offering sharing a platform with the Ford Focus.
The latest generation was released in 2004 to replace the ageing previous generation; despite facelifts the S40 is one of the more dowdy cars in the suddenly-sexy Volvo range.
Engines include petrols and diesels – including the standout T5 petrol engine with 230bhp – but including frugal DRIVe diesels capable of 65mpg.
Volvo S40 prices start at around £18,000. An estate variant is available in the form of the V50.

Plenty of grip means good cornering ability for the S40 with a minimum of body roll and for a Volvo it feels surprisingly agile but it’s just not quite as good as some of its rivals. Fortunately that’s only really noticeable around corners and tight city driving.
