Mercedes AMG SLS catches golf ball at 120mph

Bookmark Video

The sheer logistics of catching a golf ball hit at 178mph in a two-seat convertible travelling at 110mph make the whole operation seem slightly implausible.

Not so for Mercedes, who took to Dunsfold Aerodrome in an attempt to break the record for the longest distance a golf ball has been hit into a moving car.

They used the Mercedes SLS AMG roadster for the daunting task, a V8 roadster that can hot 62mph from standing in 3.8 seconds and go on to reach 197mph.

However, it will also need supreme control of the car, which delivers 571bhp at 6,800rpm, to catch a golf ball moving at nearly 180mph.

To do this Mercedes enlisted the help of ex-F1 driver David Coulthard and pro golfer Jake Shepherd to complete the feat.

Merc fans may be upset to hear the golf ball struck the bonnet seven times in practise but, as the video shows, the incredible feat was achieved eventually - and a new world record of 250 metres.

Here is the Mercedes account of the achievement: "David passed Jake doing 120mph at the exact moment the golf club struck the ball, and then quickly looked skyward to find the ball in his vision (not an easy task when you're driving, let alone at considerable speed).

"Then, after a few long seconds, we saw the ball drop into the car. We heard David cheer over the radio. And a new world record had been achieved: 'The farthest golf shot caught in a moving car."
