Smart is a manufacturer of small city cars and is owned by German car maker Mercedes.

Smart has just one car in the range; the Fortwo city car in coupe and cabriolet body styles. Both feature two seats and ultra-compact dimensions designed for use in cities.

Smart previously made the ForFour supermini and the Smart Roadster – a tiny roadster with awesome handling ability.

Designed as a lifestyle brand, Smart offers a wide range of customisations for its cars. Smart regularly introduces special editions featuring garish colours or tie-ins with fashion labels such as DIESEL and often uses interactive marketing campaigns to promote its cars.

Smart designs its ‘urban mobility’ cars to fit easily into city parking spaces and nip through busy city traffic.

The size of the cars and small, frugal petrol and diesel engines are designed to bring the cost of ownership down wherever possible.

Smart has the honour of delivering the lowest average CO2 emissions from its cars out of any brand in Europe – a fact purely down to the single, two-seat model the brand currently offers.

However, a turbocharged Smart Fortwo Brabus special edition three-cylinder petrol version cranks horsepower up to 102bhp and adds some sporty touches.

Smart is reportedly planning an electric version to add to its range and a larger, four-seat car could go on sale as early as 2011.
