Kia Cross GT Concept appears at Chicago Auto Show

Kia has unveiled its Cross GT concept at the Chicago Auto Show which offers hints of the brand's future in larger segments.

Kia says the GT Cross concept 'seamlessly melds high technology with nature'. The manufacturer admits that it's keen to introduce a larger premium SUV than the Kia Sorento to the market.

The Cross GT is based on the GT's chassis, featuring short overhangs, a long wheelbase and wide posture. The Cross GT offers incredible driver visibility thanks to its tall stature. It also features all-wheel drive.

The Cross GT is powered by an efficient hybrid powertrain. The car's state-of-the-art 3.8-litre V6 hybrid is an evolution of Kia's parallel hybrid system, available as an eight-speed automatic.

An electric motor is also placed between the V6 and the car's transmission. When combined they produce 500 lb/ft of torque and 400 horsepower, and can produce an all-electric range of 20 miles. Four passengers can sit comfortably in the car, with the interior boasting a large, airy cabin.

Kia is keen to emphasise that the Cross GT is strictly a concept, but has confirmed that it hopes some of the technologies seen in the car make their way to the production phase in the future.

'Suicide doors' also feature heavily on the Cross GT concept. Dual rear-hinged doors provide easy access to passengers and cargo, and provides an air of sophistication to the model, and complement the car's overall clam shell design.

Advanced LED technology on the Cross GT concept also provide a strong lighting identity on the car, highlighting the model's signature grille.

A multi-panelled sky light with hexagonal glass inserts features inside the cabin, underlining the car's premium design.

Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors Corporation President and Global Chief of Design, said: "The debut of the GT in 2011 heralded a new frontier for Kia, both from a design and a business perspective.

"It beautifully illustrated to the world that the brand was ready to explore the possibility of perhaps one day offering a full-size rear-wheel-drive luxury saloon. The Cross GT, with its raised stance and large cargo area, allows us to envision the GT in the form of a full-size luxury crossover."
