Seeking a car for the end of the world
DON'T PANIC! The world is not about to end... we hope.
With today's release of the Brad Pitt-fronted 'World War Z', as well as the recently-released, M.Night Shyamalan-directed film 'After Earth', which featured Will Smith and his son Jaden Smith, I thought that I would ask some of the MotorTorque team what car they would like to welcome in the end of days with.
So sit back, relax, don't fret about The World's End, enjoy our picks and let us know what you think or what you would have picked.
DeLorean DMC-12 - @SimonFMcBride
"DeLorean DMC-12 in Back to the Future spec meaning I can travel back through time. It may be the end of the world but I can go back to happier times. As the song says 'You'll never walk alone'... with this car." -
Bless him; he thinks time travel is real.
As good as the DeLorean DMC-12 is (and as much as I want one myself), I can't help but hear Doc Brown in my ear telling me that other cars would rip through this like it was 'tin foil'.
And that goes for post-apocalyptic-mutant-humanoid-beasts too.
(Editor speak: "Ha ha Glenn but the DeLorean DMC-12 was built in Belfast and is close to my heart.")
1959 Corvette Convertible V8 - @MTRichB
"This car just looks amazing, especially with its red and white colour scheme. If it really was the end of the world I would want to go out in style.
"I can just see myself now, driving toward a tidal wave or mushroom cloud, roof down, sunglasses on with 'Have you ever seen the rain' by Creedance Clearwater Revival bouncing on the stereo." -
He likes to think he's cool but really he's a shy mouse.
OK, we lied.
Anyway, if the world were to end, why not join Rich in enjoying our last few precious moments while in a pretty sexy looking vehicle.
It's the little things and all that.
Ferrari 250 GTO - @MTSteG
"If you're going to keep just one car in existence in 1000 years time, then preferably you want something that doesn't just explain to future generations why cars existed on a practical level, but also why people went so far as to love cars in the first place.
"This is why the 250 GTO is my choice; it's a beautiful car which caused many to swoon just at the sight of it upon its original debut back in 1962. It still looks great now and it probably always will look great. Some people today are prepared to pay millions of pounds just to own one.
"Sure it'd probably be useless in a post-apocalyptic world but the fact you and so many others can enjoy it just by admiring it is a special and priceless quality." -
Wow, need I say more? OK, well, erm; that'll do Ste, that'll do.
Oh, and it has more brake horsepower than the four horseman. Boom.
Mercedes G-Class - Stephen Reilly
"There's not one cataclysmic vista upon which this car would not look cool." -
Obviously a man of a thousand words.
I can't disagree with the other Stephen on this one, though, as the Mercedes G-Class would be able to rough any dystopian landscape with ease, while still exuding quality - although no one would be around to appreciate it.
Volkswagen Type 2 - @MTCarysB
"Iconic. It's synonymous with peace, love and the flower power movement. You can sleep in it, cook/eat in it and there might even be an acoustic guitar in the back for when you get lonely being the last human on earth.
"Endless ideas for paint jobs too, which will keep you occupied as global warming destroys the world." -
Promoting peace while the planet burns: take that self-obsessed-car-writers-who-chose-fancy-cars!
I could see this being a popular choice with our readers, especially with the vans reliability and living arrangements.
However, why choose a 'hippy van' when you could choose a...
Volkner Mobil (w/ Wiesmann Roadster) - Chris Norton
"If it's the end of the world you wouldn't know what to expect so I'm ensuring a minimum level of comfort while still allowing for a recreational spin in a sporty car on what would then be traffic free motorways! Depending on how the world ended that is!
"Also, I'd be able to speed through every speed camera that's ever annoyed me without fear of reprisal because everyone will either be dead or unable to enforce the fine due to my new mobile address." -
Yes, it's the one from Top Gear with a sports car underneath. Chris decided to put a Wiesmann Roadster within the RV for some classic cruising.
I have to agree with Chris' choice here, as I could sleep in luxury by day and cruise around the rubble by night - what more could a post-apocalyptic motoring journalist want?
Hennessey Velociraptor - @MTGlennD
"Power. Reliability. Stability. Able to protect against zombies, mutants and, possibly, meteorites and the such. You will find me surviving the World's End in a Hennessey Velociraptor." -
Wait, why am I putting a quote in my own section? Looks fancier I guess.
But yes, my choice would have to be the excellent and mean-looking Velociraptor. You cannot say that this would not look incredible when surrounded by rubble, blackened skies and fire.
With that image in your mind, I know you'll agree with me. (Editor speak: "A touch of bias there Glenn, I'll stick to my DeLorean thanks.")
So what do you think? What would your post-apocalyptic, dystopian, end of the world car be? Would you pick a survival vehicle, a classic or a sleek and sexy sports car?
