In the current ongoing times of economic troubles, these sorts of cars are very unlikely to wane in popularity any time soon, since they provide cheap transport which is also efficient and practical.
The motoring industry's manufacturers realise all this which is why more and exciting new small cars continue to roll on to the market each year, and why we have more enticing newcomers due in 2013 and beyond. But which are the best ones to look out for? What follows is MotorTorque's guide on the best small cars recently launched and upcoming in 2013.
The all-new fourth generation Renault Clio hatchback will arrive to UK motorists during early 2013.
To be sold only as a five-door model, the new Clio sports a significant and modern restyle both on the outside and inside. The car is also expected to offer a 1.2-litre petrol engine plus a 1.5-litre turbodiesel as the Clio seeks to renew its rivalry with models like the Fiesta and Corsa.
Pricing for the new Renault Clio is widely predicted to start from around £14,000.
An all new premium city car, the Vauxhall Adam carries this name to celebrate the 150 year anniversary of the manufacturer's founding, by Adam Opel in 1862.
The Adam is a three-door model with four seats and is expected to offer a frugal 1.0-litre petrol engine. Vauxhall is likely to launch the Adam during early 2013.
Pricing for the Vauxhall Adam is unannounced at this time, but is anticipated to start from just over £10,000.
The all-new MG3 supermini is anticipated to reach the UK market during autumn 2012 where it will likely serve as a cheaper rival to established rivals like the Ford Fiesta.
The MG3 is actually already established on the Chinese market, where MG's current owners originate. In the UK the MG3 is expected to come with a 107bhp 1.5-litre engine.
Pricing for the MG3 supermini will reportedly start at £9,500.
The popular Ford Fiesta supermini will receive a facelift ready in time for the 2013 UK market. The new look will be revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
A high-performance ST version of the Ford Fiesta is also in works and is set to boast an 180bhp 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine. Expect the Fiesta ST to arrive during early 2013. No details on pricing have been revealed as of yet.
An all-new Audi A2 supermini was revealed back at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, and its makers were considering making an all-electric version as well as a standard model with petrol and diesel engines.
However the exact faith of the A2 remains unclear at the moment, as reports suggest that public reaction has prompted Audi into a rethink about whether it should build the new A2 on a bigger platform. Nevertheless the A2 is still in development and could be released sometime in 2013.
A new sportier version of the Chevrolet Aveo supermini is expected to reach the UK market in 2013. Known as the Sonic RS in America, the new model is sportier then previous Aveos as Chevrolet continues to aim its new cars at a more youthful market.
Engine options are set to include a 138bhp 1.4-litre turbo engine and a sporty body kit.
An updated version of the Kia Rio hatchback is anticipated to appear on the UK market during 2013.
Few details have been confirmed as of yet but more could be revealed during the upcoming 2012 Paris Motor Show.
The Mazda2 supermini is set to be updated in 2012 with the inclusion of the manufacturer's fuel-saving Skyactiv technology. As part of the new package the Mazda2 receives a 1.3-litre petrol engine connected through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Mazda2 Skyactiv can return around 85mpg and emits below 100g/km in CO2, meaning exemption from paying road tax. No details on UK pricing have been released yet.
The Volkswagen Up is a little hatchback which shares the same platform as the Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii.
The Up uses a 1.0-litre petrol engine which emits sub 100g/km in CO2 in Bluemotion specification. Pricing for the Volkswagen Up starts at £7,995.
The Skoda Citigo is a little hatchback which shares the same platform as the Volkswagen Up! and the Seat Mii.
Under the Citigo's bonnet is a 1.0-litre petrol engine which can emit less than 100g/km in CO2. The Citigo is expected to appear in UK showrooms in June 2012 with pricing beginning from £7,630.
The Seat Mii is a little hatchback which shares the same platform as the Volkswagen Up! and the Skoda Citigo. All specifications of the Mii share a 1.0-litre petrol engine which can emit below 100g/km in CO2.
The Mii launched onto the UK market in May 2012, and is now available starting from £7,845.
The 208 comes with the choice of either a petrol or diesel powertrain and its most economical engine delivers sub 99g/km of CO2 emissions. This low emission rating is achieved thanks to a new e-HDi micro-hybrid system, which automatically stops the engine when the car is stationary, then restarts it when you want to move off.
The Peugeot 208 is currently on the UK market now starting from £9,995.
The retro-looking Fiat 500 range continues to expand and has even featured more than once in the ten best monthly sellers in the UK market during 2012.
During 2013, the 500 range is set to be enhanced with the arrival of the 500L, a five-door MPV version of the original 500. The Fiat range is also set to be joined by the 500X, a rugged crossover conversion of the city car.
The standard Fiat 500 is currently on market starting from £9,960.
The highly successful Citroen DS3 supermini is still available on the UK market, with pricing currently starting at £12,600.
A convertible version of the DS3 is anticipated to be revealed at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, before appearing in dealerships worldwide during 2013.
The upcoming new Mitsubishi Colt supermini is expected to offer a 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engine, with a CO2 emissions output averaging below 100g/km. Prices are expected to start from around £9,500 when it hits markets during 2013.
An all-new second generation Hyundai i10 city car is currently on the cards, and whilst few details have been confirmed yet it is set for a 2013 release.
The current and first generation i10 is still on the UK market, with pricing starting from just £8,345 for the Classic trim model.
The Audi A1 supermini is currently on sale from £13,420 for the standard three-door model. During 2012 the range was expanded with the introduction of the larger five-door A1 Sportback, which is available now from £13,980.
An all-electric version of the supermini called the A1 e-tron has also been in the works, however development of this car has reportedly been halted while Audi reviews its future electric car plans.
The high-selling Vauxhall Corsa, a frequent entry amongst the top three best selling cars in the UK market, is set for a big update in 2013.
Following on from the arrival of the all-new Adam city car next year, the next Corsa supermini could soon follow its path and is even rumoured to appear at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. For now the Corsa is available from £9,495.
The third generation Fiat Panda city car arrived to the UK earlier in 2012 and is currently available from just £8,900.
A 4x4 crossover version of the latest Panda is anticipated to hit markets worldwide during 2013. It will feature an all-wheel drive powertrain with a choice of petrol and diesel engines and the car could debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September.
Alfa Romeo TwinAir
The Alfa Romeo TwinAir is an upcoming addition to UK showrooms, which can be order now from £13,205. This specification of the three-door hatchback supermini features an 85bhp 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine.
With this unit the Mito officially returns 67.8mpg on the combined cycle and emits just 98g/km in CO2, making it the cleanest and most efficient model in the range.
