Since it was founded in 1973, Caterham has been producing specialist lightweight, open-wheel sports cars in the UK.
The manufacturer’s origins stem from the Lotus Seven built in 1957. Back then the car was embraced by fans as a low-cost, lightweight sports car and successful race car; revised versions were launched through the sixties and seventies.
Caterham had been a major dealer of Lotus Sevens during the sixties, the founder of the Caterham, Graham Nearn, purchased rights to manufacture the Lotus Seven under his own company name in 1973. Thus Caterham and the production of its own Seven model began.
Currently the Seven is the only (road-legal) model that Caterham manufacture, albeit in various derivates and editions The Seven though has gone on to achieve iconic status from media and car enthusiasts alike. Caterham has in its time created alternate/upgraded models based on the Caterham/Lotus Seven.
