The assumption that winter tyres are only meant for snowy or icy conditions is one that Volkswagen is particularly keen to address.
Winter tyres are made of a rubber compound which stays soft and optimum in temperatures below seven degrees Celsius, where as conventional tyres will stiffen and lose grip in such conditions.
According to statistics from the Met Office, the average UK temperature during winter months in the past century falls below six degrees Celsius.
Volkswagen is keen to spread the message being touted by campaigns such as TyreSafe, telling drivers that winter tyres are a logical choice during the winter regardless of the state of the road.
Each model in Volkswagen’s current range can now be ordered with a complete fully fitted set of winter tyres for a cost of £250.
For a steeper price of £725, Volkswagen will fit ‘winter wheels’ as well as tyres. Available as 15" or 19" alloys, these wheels are specially designed for anti-corrosion resistance against snow and salt.
Volkswagen is also offering durable nylon tyre/wheel storage bags for each winter tyre, a set of four will cost £25.
