New research suggests those British motorists are car dunces, with a third admitting they know virtually nothing about how their car works.
The study be Green Flag reveals that 11% don’t know how to open the bonnet; 13% don’t know where to find the dipstick or how to fill up windscreen washers; while 22% don’t know how to check tyre pressure.

Two million motorists (8%) wouldn’t recognise a low oil light while one million (3%) don’t know what their low fuel light looks like (three per cent). Running out of fuel is one of the most common reasons for car breakdowns.
The study also showed that around half of all motorists would be stumped by the proposition of finding spark plus, attach jump leads or change a spare tyre.
Philippa Naylor, spokesperson for Green Flag, said: “There are few things more boring than being stuck waiting for help and just by brushing up on some basic car maintenance knowledge, drivers could identify some simple problems before the frustration kicks in and they need to call us out for expert help."
Other findings – sure to please Jeremy Clarkson – revealed that women are more clueless than men, with 15% not knowing how to open a bonnet.
