A man in Liverpool has been sent to jail after he drove away from court minutes after receiving a driving ban.
Peter Latham received a year-long ban after admitting driving under the influence and using a mobile phone while driving at Liverpool Community Justice Centre in Vauxhall.
But minutes later Latham walked from the court to his car and drove himself home, still holding his driving ban in his hand. He was spotted on CCTV and the taped handed over to police.
The move was described by Judge Ian Lomax as a ‘blatant and tantamount to contempt’ and sentenced him to ten weeks in prison.
His solicitor claimed Latham thought the ban came into effect when he handed in his driving licence.
