Last rites read for the UK's most expensive saloons

Its cars cost upwards of £300,000, lost £350 in value every day and sold in shockingly low numbers in the UK; and now Maybach has officially confirmed it will not build any more cars.

Buyers will have to turn to the used car markets to get their hands on the most expensive, luxurious and biggest saloon on the market today.

Looking for a new car then why not start with a glossy MAYBACH brochure

Luckily, the £340,000 range-topping Maybach 62 is one of the worst cars in the UK for residual values after it was revealed it lost up to £350 per day in the first few years of ownership - leaving a lower-priced used car for fans of the brand.

A 2004 Maybach 62 on Auto Trader with just 14,000 miles is currently listed at just £140,000 while a Maybach 57 can be snapped up for less than £80,000 on the used car website.

However, this loss of value, coupled with competition from UK-based luxury car makers and resulting low sales has signalled the end of the brand as a new car option.

The Mercedes-owned super-saloon brand, known for its huge, ostentatious and dubiously-designed saloons, has officially been given its last rites by the German manufacturer.

A favourite for the image-conscious rich - the car featured heavily in TV favourite Dragon's Den - the doomed Maybach could not compete with British-built Rolls Royce and Bentley saloons and Mercedes has now decided to cut its losses with the brand.

Price lists for the new 2013 Maybach range simply list the luxury saloons as 'discontinued' across all markets.

Slow sales for the brand since its 2003 re-launch led to drastic reductions in price in 2011 and early this year it was announced it would be scrapped altogether. There are less than 100 registered Maybach cars on UK roads, according to HowManyLeft.co.uk.

However, it is only this week Mercedes has officially ceased production of the luxury barges, which came in Maybach 57 (at £175,000) and monstrous, £300,000-plus Maybach 62 variations.

Mercedes will now attempt to take on Rolls Royce with a new Mercedes S-Class saloon, which will be offered in three different wheelbase lengths including a Maybach-rivalling 'S600 Pullman' version.

The new Mercedes will be expected to be more luxurious than ever before to replace the ultra-expensive Maybach in the company's portfolio.

It will act as an exclusive model at the top of the range for those who wish to drive - or be driven in - one of the most distinctive statements on intent on UK roads.

The new Mercedes S-Class will arrive in the UK in 2013.
