Fiat brand chief Gianluca Italia has recently confirmed that Fiat is looking to further expand the 500 range after the release of the Trekking.
"We are looking at a full family of vehicles. We know that the 500 is often bought by parents for their children but the loyalty to the car is low, around 60 percent of drivers move onto something bigger. We want to be able to offer them an extended 500 range.
"The 500 has been a very big success and the model still has a long way to go and we have a number of new developments."
The 500 Trekking will be a two-wheel-drive crossover, and includes Fiat's traction+ system which will appear at Geneva early next month.
A 4x4 Fiat 500 is also on the horizon, called the Fiat 500X. "We are looking at many other variants," Italia adds.
Fiat is looking for the 500L to compete in the B-segment thanks to its two-cylinder Twin Air turbocharged petrol engine. The car can produce 105bhp while keeping emissions down to 112 g/km.
The Fiat 500L also features stop start and Eco mode. Another engine option is the 1.6-litre multijet diesel, which also produces 105bhp. The engine helps produce entirely different driving characteristics though, according to Fiat.
"For the first time the 500 now has five-doors, it is a full five-seater and there is plenty of room for luggage. The car might be B-segment in size but it has the interior space of a family car," says Italia.
Fiat is promoting the 500L with a 'mum rap', which has amassed millions of views online.
