Cars that beat the Congestion Charge

image for 'Cars that beat the Congestion Charge'

While the advent of Boris Johnson as the London Mayor may be good news for hairdressers, teetotal London Undergrounders and Range Rover Sport owners, those driving a host of superminis and low-polluting cars may have sighed a despairing sigh, as Johnson has indicated that he will not back plans to scrap the Congestion Charge for drivers of cars emitting less than 120g/km.

As a result literally dozens of premature articles acclaiming the scrapping of the charge for such vehicles are now hopelessly out-of-date. Here at MotorTorque we've adapted our article on cars exempt from the congestion charge to reflect Boris' vision for London transport.

What that means is that alternatively-fuelled cars such as electric vehicles, hybrids, biofuel vehicles and those using LPG and CNG are still exempt from the C-Charge, regardless of their overall CO2 levels, while cars that might as little as 99g/km will still pay the full amount.

Good news for drivers of large SUVs, luxury cars and performance cars too - they will pay the same amount as the likes of the 99g/km city cars, rather than the £25 per day suggested by Ken.

As a result of this confusion we've adapted our list of cars beating the C-Charge to include all those that are, and all those that were in line to be exempt.

So, if you've heard that your car might be in line for a free London driving, check our list below to find yours and discover whether or not you'll be shelling out for Boris' London buses.

Indeed. The Mayoral tit-for-tat has meant two rewrites of this article already, This one slipped through the net.

The article states for the Toyota Prius: 'Exempt from the congestion charge: No.' I´m assuming this is a typo :)

Yep it´s a pretty odd system when you look at it objectively. I´ve no doubt a lot of people are relieved they ´re not facing the prospect of a £25 per day charge, but a graduated system based on emissions seems much more sensible on the face of it than the one Londoners are stuck with.

Can not believe cars producing 220 grams pollution are congestion charge free and my Smart cars with 116 grams must pay, have Volvo and other high gram manufactures been giving silver in the hand shacking with Boris??????
