Top ten cool entries to the Red Bull Soapbox 2013
The 2013 Red Bull Soapbox is just around the corner, promising wacky atmosphere and enticingly enthusiastic entries aplenty.
As with every Red Bull event, you can expect an energetic vibe in the air at this year's Soapbox race - fuelled of course by the leftfield entries of this year's competitors.
The inventiveness of each entry will earn them brownie points with the judges - winning the race will obviously be an advantage.
The 2013 Red Bull Soapbox is taking place on Sunday July 14th at Alexandra Palace, London, and as MotorTorque has just received an invite, we thought we would gear up and choose ten of our favourite entries into this year's gravity driven roller race. Enjoy.
Bangers and Smash
Just like the name suggest, this team is focusing on the classic British Bangers and Smash cuisine of brown sauce with their AP Saucemobile - which they claim will 'smash' the competition. Rar rar lads, and all that jazz.
The fact that this team made asparagus relevant to motoring is worth merit in itself. This soapbox entry fuses...well a handful of asparagus with four wheels, but that is the kind of know how attitude we like at MotorTorque. This is what you call green motoring *cough*.
Get To Ze Chopper
Arnold Schwarzenegger fans will appreciate this nostalgic reference. This entry is being backed by London's Air Ambulance Charity and is playing on the Helicopter aspect of their job. I am intrigued to see how this copter will do on the road.
Crooked (Spire) Cops
This is one of many mini replica entries into this year's soapbox. This entry has been conjured up by the 'Operational Support Team' of riot officers based in Derbyshire - hence the police theme. The team promises to deliver some "cop and robber" style chases.
Block Gear has gone all out with this makeshift Lego car, accompanied by elaborate costumes that will get the crowds wooing, especially the younger spectators. Block Gear expressed their nervousness for the event and said they were "Bricking it".
Does My Scrum Look Big in This
This soapbox may have you tilting your head at the screen wondering, how does that work? Designed with a rugby scrum in mind, this soapbox has its driver positioned at the back of the scrum, seen in the far right of the picture. This team is hoping to get the crowds chanting "Crouch, Touch, Engage!"
This team epitomises the father and son soapbox project seen in TV shows like The Simpsons. '1 Father, 1 Son, 1 Tin, 1 Loaf' as it says in their entry description. This soapbox is literally a giant loaf of bread in a tin, made by father and son bakers. Brilliant.
This group of egg loving individuals has embraced the spirit of the egg so much that their entry description oozes egg puns (EGGsited, EGGceptional and EGGsaturating to name just a few.) In all fairness, this soapbox looks pretty well built and sturdy - no Yoke (sorry, couldn't resist.)
Team Alpha Super Awesome Cool Dynamite Wolf Squadron
Although this name may seem a little ridiculous, it is quite appropriate as this entry really is Super Awesome Cool Dyn... you get the idea. It almost looks like a concept car by someone like BMW. I can't wait to see how fast this one can go.
The Toob MC Hammersmith & City Boi
Determined to make the guise of a London underground train 'superteranean', this team of lads have taken a classic rectangular design and done just that. The team will prove that 'the tube really is the sickest form of travel' and will see their soapbox 'hurtle to the bottom of Alexandra Park quicker than you can say mind the gap.'
So, we have our list and will be looking to snap as many of them as we can this Sunday. Keep an eye on my Twitter feed @MTRichB for all the latest updates from the event. Contestants, start your... damn, got me again.
